Most people leave India saying that Udaipur was their favorite place – and one they would want to return back to. There are many reasons for this but I think it’s because not only is it STUNNING, has great Rajasthani food, amazing attractions and awesome Udaipur sightseeing around every corner, and quality shopping – it also is clean and very tourist friendly. It makes it a very easy travel experience compared to some other Indian cities. Of all the cities in India, I think the top places to visit in Udaipur dwarf anywhere else in comparison: the palaces, forts, and temples here are EPIC and stunning. Here are my favorite places to visit in Udaipur!
The ultimate guide above will get into the best restaurants, hotels, chill-out places, and shopping as well as tips on transportation, budget, and safety while this guide is more for Udaipur sightseeing and epic places to visit in Udaipur as a tourist so you don’t have any FOMO when you leave. As always, I don’t include places to just include them – I only put the ones that are actually cool and worth seeing.
8 Best Places to Visit in Udaipur
1. City Palace
This place is basically jaw-dropping and it’s not just the top attraction in Udaipur, but one of the best in all of India. You won’t need to long to wander through – but it has a lot of history to read and MANY photo opportunities. You will not run out of inspiration. Each room is unique and it’s like stepping back into a royal movie set – except it’s all real!
2. Monsoon Palace
Want a great view? Head out to monsoon palace. I don’t think the palace itself is great in comparison to the Lake Palace, but it’s still super cool. The views are great and there are many photo opportunities inside as well. It’s just outside of town, so you’ll want to take an Uber.
3. Lake Pichola
Lake Pichola is the main lake in the middle of the city. You can’t miss it! Lake Palace (the Taj hotel) is in the middle of it and City Palace is on the side. Many of the best boutique hotels are havelis that are situated on the edge of the lake. You cannot swim in it. You will see little kids jump in though and ladies doing their washing in it. You should take a boat ride around the lake. Try to do this either at sunrise or sunset!
4. Lake Palace Udaipur (AKA Jag Mandir)
The Lake Palace is the Taj Hotel. If you aren’t a guest you can’t go inside but you can ride around it on the boat. You can hire a boat at the lake or through your hotel. It’s definitely a fun experience. I recommend doing a luxe boat trip like mine (complete with snacks) rather than the jam-packed tourist boats where you’ll have to wear a life-jacket and it’s over before you know it.
5. Jagdish Temple
This is the main temple in the center of town. You won’t be able to miss it! You can go inside (shoes off!) and take photos. You can offer a donation if you like and buy flowers inside.
6. Eklingji Temple and Drinathji Temple
Both of these temples are outside of Udaipur. If you really want to see them, you can take an Uber but personally, they aren’t worth going to unless you have more than 3 days in Udaipur.
7. Three Other Lakes
Pichola isn’t the only lake in Udaipur; it’s just the most centrally located. There are four lakes in Udaipur. If you are up for extra Udaipur sightseeing then go off in an exploration of the other top three lakes:
- Fateh Sagar Lake
- Jaisamand Lake
- Rajsamand Lake
Beautiful gardens and a highly popular tourist destination in Udaipur. While it’s not on the top of this list, it is worth visiting if you have 3+ days in Udaipur. It was built in the 1700s for the royal ladies to spend time in quiet and now it’s still giving off those serene vibes with lotus ponds and giant marble elephants.
